Big Kahuna and anyone else living on island, I have read every single post on this site, inluding all the comments on your posts about the crime. I agree with many people. I do have a thought...or more of a question. What do YOU really think of the island? Do you go to dinner and worry about parking your car and walking to the restaurant. Do you go to bars and watch over your shoulder on a regular basis? Are you worried for your family walking from their car to the front door every day? Do these things cross your mind often and are you truly scared? The reason I ask is this. My wife and I have been planning and saving for a move in a few years. I would still love to, but am concerned for her's and my safety. Now, my wife can kick anyone's ass and is pretty bad ass in her own way. But she cant beat a gun or multiple assailants. I can hold my own in most situations, but probably cant take on 3 islanders who really want my wife or my money. If you, people who live on the island, can assure she and I that you dont fear for your lives everyday, we will continue our planning. I just dont want to be worrying when she goes to work everyday that she may not come home, or come home raped or beaten up. I am simply looking for your true thoughts. Yes the island crime is out of control and things need to be done, but it so damn beautiful and I want to be there badly. I dont live in a big city so i dont experience the types of things that are happening in STT or other big cities, bit I am also not planning to move to a big city; I am planning on moving to STT. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Chris

No I don't fear for my life or safety. We live life the same way we have. We're all very angry that the crime element has shown up in places the normal person would go, like Kmart during the day. There's been multiple shootouts involving taxi's. So we are just being extra cautious right now and using our streetsmarts.

That is what i was hoping to hear. So you dont see hoodlums everywhere you go? I will continue to save and watch this site as i have been. I have a feeling with all the attention this last incident received, we will see some signs of improvement. Keep doing your good work and we will see you in a few years.

I'm in the same boat. Thinking of moving down and visited the island just last week and didn't have a single problem...a day after the Coki Beach shooting. The beach was dead as a result, which was good for me (bad for local business) as I snuck right in, did a quick dive and snorkel and drove out. There was a cop on an ATV patrolling the beach. I felt perfectly safe.

It's just like anywhere really...if you live your life worrying about what could happen you'll be miserable. Just be aware of your surroundings and stay out of areas where common sense tells you you shouldn't be after the sun goes down.

The thing I didn't like is the way the people (not all) don't seem to care about their land. It is very beautiful there with the sea, foliage and the rainforest sounds you hear when the sun goes down, but along with that you get the trash everywhere and some parts are very dirty and run down. The government needs to step up with regulations and preservation before it turns into a garbage dump, but I can write a whole post on that. Maybe I will.

Good to know....I can't imagine throwing this dream away yet....Puerto Rico just didn't have the same feel...and neither does the mainland... We'll see how we feel after this longer visit.....and living it up more like a local...in a really nice villa....but more like a local....lol

Another perspective - I have been here 10 years - and in the last 2 years I have become more afraid. I don't look over my shoulder all the time but I think about it. There was a shooting at Tutu Mall at noon. Had my office not moved the week before I would have been there getting my sandwich at Subway. I do restrict my 15 year old daughter more because I am concerned for her safety. In the past year and a half I have had two laptops stolen (one time from my home with burglar bars)and know of several people who's homes have been broken into. This isn't the way it was 5 to 10 years ago. The economy has a lot to do with it but when I make a police report about crimes that happen to me and ask them what they will do they just laugh at me. When I asked one policeman what would be done (after he took the report of someone breaking into my home) he laughed and told me it was time for him to get some sleep but I could pick up the report in about a week.

Are these gangsters taking out other gangsters? It's odd this sort of thing happens during the day at public places with innocent people around.

Yes, but innocent people are caught in the crossfire and the horrible tragedy at Coki resulting in a 14 year old girl being shot and killed isn't the first time an innocent has been caught in the crossfire. In a big city you can stay away from 'bad areas' or high crime areas. Here on a small island you can't. Our only department store is K-Mart and our only mall is Tutu Mall. At some point in your life here you will go to K-Mart and you will go to the mall. And it might happen at noon. And this isn't the first highly popular spot where shootings have happened.

so i just found this site today and upon hearing about the recent crime i was wondering what the job market may look like down there for security contractors....Executive protection (bodyguards),bar/nightclub security ect.Having worked overseas as a contractor for awhile it might be nice to work in paradise.Ive thought about making the move that way,but i never saw much in the way of employment in my field and didnt really want to do the overseas jobs anymore.so any info anyone can give me would be great.

My son is a contractor there, living in STT for a few years. His toolbag which contained his passport and license was stolen out of his truck. Now he cannot get home. I don't know what to do.

First off you don't need a passport to get home a drivers license will work just fine. He needs to get a duplicate license is all.
