Hello....I'm so excited to have found this site! My best friend and I are moving to St.Thomas Sept.15th of this year. We've been researching and reading absolutely everything we can.I know a pre-move visit is highly advised, but neither of us have ever been much for planning so we decided to just go for it. :) We're both in the spa industry in Colorado at the moment...and would love to continue in that, but I'm sure spa jobs are somewhat hard to come by. She's been a bartender for years before the spa and I've been in every area of customer service. Ideally we'd like for at least one of us to have a job lined up before coming there. Is it absolutely impossible to have a job lined up beforehand? Also...when looking for an apartment, are most of the locals pretty trustworthy....can you trust your renting the place you see pictures of, or is it best to have a few viewings lined up and waiting until getting there to actually settle on one place? Thank you so much for any info or advice. :)
I would suggest viewing the apartments before renting them. Sometimes the pictures don't show you the little things. I have lived here for 13 years and all the places that I have lived in the landlords are great. As far as SPA jobs I don't really see anything advertised however, there are a lot of jobs available in bars and restaurants.
in what area of the spa do you guys work in? youll not find any appropriate info online regarding massage therapy licensure, if that is in fact the route you intend to take. i have personal thoughts and experience in this arena if you care to pm me.
as far as rentals, i am new to stt, came here for the exact same reasons you are. i would not suggest a realtor. for me, it was easier finding a place by word of mouth. check out any local message board ie: restaurant bulletin boards, laundromat bulletins, etc. ask everyone you come in contact with. really. if you take a taxi, ask the driver.
you absolutely need to be here to scope out the area your home hunting in. no joke. the pics dont always show what your living in or around for that matter. but its the same stateside as well.
good luck, dearie
I am moving to the rock on 9/11/10. Having lived abroad already in my life, here are a few tips: Do not rent until you get there and see what is actually available. Word of mouth is the best way and you can check Craig's list and then contact the people once you are there. You need to get a lay of the land....how you will get around, etc.
Unless you know the people who hire you, its not wise or probably possible to secure employment ahead of time. Again, you need to see where you will work and they need to see you.
I am staying at a guest house for a month, Two Sandals By The Sea, while I find a place to live.
Hope I meet you guys down there...Ann
The St. Thomas Message Boards are set up to spread the good word of St. Thomas. Unlike many other message boards that prohibit any type of self promotion we encourage it. We want our locals to be able to say they own a business and to give them a try. We also want to help visitors with good, honest opinions. So feel free to start a discussion related to St. Thomas.
