The St. Thomas Internet Challenge – Who Is The Best – Broadband VI or Choice?

I have tested the download and upload speeds of both Choice and Broadband VI (I don’t have Innovative yet because they are not in my area). The test was done using http://testmy.net, each test was done at the same exact time (I have both Choice and Broadband VI). Each modem/signal can obtain speeds of up to 3 Mbps and each are full bar strength so we are indeed comparing apples to apples. I tested 2- 3 times per day at different times.

Special Note: The test was supposed to begin on Monday January 17th 2011 but Broadband VI’s Inner Brass signal was out again.

Saturday January 22nd 2011

9:45 am: Broadband VI download: 2958 Kbps or 2.96 Mbps, upload: 885 Kbps or 0.9 Mbps

Choice download: 183 Kbps or 0.18 Mbps , upload: 71 Kbps or 0.1 Mbps

*****special note***** 183 Kbps download is disgusting and Choice should be ashamed of themselves. They are clearly very unstable when it comes to download speeds and apparently they cannot manage their users properly to provide consistent download speeds. We might as well be using friggin’ dial-up at these speeds.

6:00 pm: Broadband VI download: 3033 Kbps or 3.03 Mbps, upload: 787 Kbps or 0.8 Mbps

Choice download: 1078 Kbps or 1.1 Mbps , upload: 59 Kbps or 0.1 Mbps

Sunday January 23rd 2011

8:00 am: Broadband VI download: 3055 Kbps or 3.06 Mbps, upload: 897 Kbps or 0.9 Mbps

Choice download: 421 Kbps or 0.42 Mbps , upload: 101 Kbps or 0.1 Mbps

10:00 am: Broadband VI download: 3025 Kbps or 3.03 Mbps, upload: 834 Kbps or 0.8 Mbps

Choice download: 1246 Kbps or 1.25 Mbps , upload: 54 Kbps or 0.1 Mbps

7:15 pm: Broadband VI download: 2987 Kbps or 2.99 Mbps, upload: 877 Kbps or 0.9 Mbps

Choice download: 603 Kbps or 0.6 Mbps , upload: 212 Kbps or 0.2 Mbps

Clearly when Broadband VI’s service is up and running it is far superior as their download speeds are 4-10 times as fast and their upload speed is 8-10 times as fast. There really is no comparison. Pricing is a bit high ($99 for 1.5 Mbps)  but if you want the guaranteed speed then you’ll have to pay the price. Customer service is not the greatest but then again neither is Choice’s. So that’s a wash.

One positive for Choice, if speed is not an issue (there are still those who don’t care) is that the modem is portable. This is great if you need to bring it from place to place whereas Broadband VI is set for one location.

In conclusion: Broadband VI is faster and more reliable with both download and upload speeds. They are still having issues with the Inner Brass signal but once that is solved (fingers crossed as I am on it) They would be the recommended choice over Choice.

Neither Choice or Broadband VI are advertisers on the St. Thomas Blog. My statements are factual and objective.
