Peaceful Birds vs. Awful WAPA

Did you all see the article in the VI Daily yesterday praising WAPA’s new plan to lower rates and get their company out of the archaic and into the modern?

Me neither.

Unfortunately I did see an article that I fear will be the first of many, and it’s already the first of two as there is another article this morning of the same tone.

Yesterday the VI Daily’s front page has the headline, “Radio Station signs off, blames rising power rates”. A snippet:

“A 100,000-watt radio station based in the Virgin Islands went off the air Tuesday afternoon thanks in large part, the owners say, to climbing electricity costs from the V.I. Water and Power Authority (WAPA). As of Tuesday evening, WWKS-FM – better known as Kiss 101.3 FM – stopped broadcasting from Cruz Bay. Last week, WAPA announced a rate increase to 38.3 cents per kilowatt hour. “They gotta realize they’re killing the business community,” Gordon Ackley said. “They’re killing the Virgin Islands.”"

This morning brought the following headline from the Source, “Milk Supply cut by St. Thomas Dairies”. A snippet:

“This is the last week St. Thomas Dairies will offer milk for sale in island stores. In a surprise move, the company announced late Wednesday that it is ceasing the production and distribution of milk in half and full gallons as of Sunday, blaming “ever increasing electricity costs” as the primary reason for the decision as well as competition from imported milk and increases in the cost of raw materials. It will continue to manufacture milk and juices for schools and “other government agencies.” There was no immediate response on how the action may affect employment, and whether its popular ice cream stand and dairy convenience center near Magens Bay will continue to operate.”

We look to you, candidates vying for office, to get us out of this ‘current’ hole. And with that I’ll quit my WAPA bitching and move on to the next subject, Peaceful Birds.

I snapped this group of five feathered friends on a Sunday morning, at Magens Bay (click to enlarge):

They were quiet and still, all facing the bar, gearing up for an afternoon of french fry stealing. Ah, to be a bird.
