Walmart Is In St. Thomas US Virgin Islands…

Virtually that is. You can order through their website at http://www.walmart.com/. And MOST times it’s FREE shipping. If you spend over $45 it’s been free for us anyway.

But wait there’s more…

They send it priority and it gets here within 3-5 days. They don’t have an option for priority but that’s how they’ve been sending it.

I’ve had two 32″ plasma TV’s shipped here and the prices are ridiculously low compared to our stores. I paid $210 for a 32″ Hi-Def TV, find one of those in St. Thomas!

We just got delivered 5 boxes (above) of necessities like tooth paste, shaving creme etc. Most of the stuff is 40%-50% less than in our stores.

And yet we pay double the mainland cost. Another good example of how WAPA’s indirect costs are once again making it impossible to do business locally. The impact of this is going to be pretty big when everyone latches on to what Wal Mart is doing – people will clearly wait three to five days for household goods if the cost is half the local cost. Once again, the ineptness of the VI government in responding to WAPA is demonstrated – this time by those good ole Arkansas boys…:)”

I love Wal-Mart…I dont care what anyone says…And free shipping…Thats even better.
Every time I go to the states I stock up on everything at Wal-Mart and put it in my check in bags…50 pounds worth. Its worth the 25.00 bag fee compared to the HIGH prices we pay here.Wal-Mart Rocks.
The online thing sounds good for when I can’t afford to fly out of here.
LEAC fees get all my Vacation money.

    Suzanne Said,

Thanks for the news! I think many people in St Thomas feel as though it’s a hassle to do what can actually be easy to do. Also like me in the past..I have wanted to support businesses in
St Thomas but enough is enough!
Recently I sent out a posting to Home Goods about opening a store in St Thomas. I did get a quick response from Home Goods stating that they have quite a few stores in PR and may consider opening one in STT in the future as they would love to be there.

It sucks that Amazon has stopped free super-saver shipping to the VI. I guess Walmart will have to do.

    Michelle Said,

What an excelletn resource for all of us trying to venture off the mainland! Thanks… So my husband and I and our 15 y.o. daughter are planning on moving to St. Thomas. I am an RN with several years experience in ICU. I am interviewing for jobs now at RSL Medical Center. What is the perception of the hospital in the area? I havent visited the facility yet…Is it modern, comparable to a hospital in Miami?

My husband is in telecommunications. He works on cell phone towers construction and upgrades for TMoible, ATT, verizon, etc. Do you know of any companies that contract for that type of work?

    Thanks very much!

  11. February 28, 2012 @ 5:14 am

    BIG Kahuna Said,

The perception of our hospital is not good and no it does not come close to a stateside hospital (that’s the general consensus). You’ll find that your training in the states (doing the right thing by the book) will be ethically challenged here. I would strongly suggest you speak to a nurse here before you make any commitments. Contact Michele here: shellyshiel@yahoo.com and tell her Scott White sent you. She’s been a nurse here for many years and will tell you the scoop, ask her to be brutally honest.

Your husband should look at the following companies: Innovative, Broadband VI, Ackley, and Choice Communications for his work.

You will need to send your daughter to a private school to obtain any sort of real education here, that’s a minimum $10,000 plus a year.

I would strongly suggest a 2 week pre-move visit here as well. Maybe they’d let you work 2 weeks while you were here before you made a final decision?

yeah, but Walmart is evil. I used to work with them–they are unscrupulous, incredibly so. so if you are tempted to buy from Walmart, consider that they squeeze all the life out of their American suppliers, to the point that some go bankrupt, and well, you know about their foreign practices. sometimes you have to do the right thing. sure, their PR machine does an awesome job placing “do-gooder” programs and marketing the hell out of them, but don’t be fooled. they are indeed evil and the more power YOU give them, the more they will take from this country. they worship the bottom line and that’s all.

    Daniela Said,

How did you get free shipping at Walmart, I tried it today and they charged me for shipping. To be fair it was cheaper then at Amazon but still. I would love to know how to get the free shipping with Walmart

  15. March 21, 2012 @ 3:23 pm

    BIG Kahuna Said,

Anything over $45 has been free for me.

  16. May 15, 2012 @ 9:55 pm

    Jonathan Hawkes Said,

Did you use a PO Box or physical address? I just tried both and it said, “Due to carrier restrictions, one or more items in your order cannot be delivered to the shipping address entered.”

  17. May 16, 2012 @ 6:23 am

    BIG Kahuna Said,

We use a mailing address, some products are served outside their network but I’ve found about 85% of their stuff can ship to STT :)

  18. October 17, 2012 @ 11:27 am

    Angie C. Said,

I too have been a customer of Walmart. If your order is $50 or more, shipping is free…However as of late, I’m seeing a shipping restriction!…They said it’s due to not having a current carrier/shipper…hope it resolves soon!!!

    Anonymous Said,

I have been told that DLCA has been working to restrict purchases from favorite stores like Walmart and Amazon to secure places like Kmart. But I beg the question, does it look like Kmart is hurting? How about Pricemart or Cost U Less? Their shelves are empty often and the lines are always long. Just another way to hurt people. They need to focus on mainstreet and saving them.

  20. October 26, 2012 @ 9:08 pm

    Barb Said,

I have been purchasing from Walmart for months until 5 weeks agao the carrier restriction statement started to show up. I called Walmart customer care at 800-966-6546 and they said there is a problem but no resolution date. I suggest others call and explain the need for this site to be working again. I was saving 50 to 75% on items that I purchased.

    BIG Kahuna Said,

I was told that the USVI government put restrictions on delivery here because it was taking away from local stores. Hard to believe.

    Barb Said,

Talked with customer service at Walmart today and they are telling me that they will no longer support shipments outside the 48 states starting Oct 26 2012.

    Lilac Said,

I enjoy reading the blog. I felt compelled to address the educational concern cited.

I am a teacher with 10 years of experience. I hold a teacher’s certificate in NJ,MD and VA and have relocated to the VI. The school district utilizes the same materials as the mainland, with the exception of the VI history materials. I will say that the education goals are the same. They are refining the instructional aspects and have many resources for individualized instruction. Yes, there is difficulty with some supplies: copiers, laminators, etc. Of course, it would be wonderful to have access to a cost effective teacher supply shop. Nonetheless, the school system provides you with a foundation. Just like on the mainland, the teacher’s skill and attitude affects what is implemented. I do agree that prep schools provide an extraordinary opportunity. I will say that Antilles and All Saints are wonderful prep schools. If you can afford it, go ahead. If your child is academically talented, the public schools offer several programs that help your child succeed via gifted programs. In middle school and high school there are honors programs that will continue to nurture and hone their skill. It’s imperative that parents play an active role in their child’s education. I am a believer that one should not rely only on a school for the sole source of “teaching” your child . Challenge your children and provide additional opportunities for growth outside the class, regardless if they are enrolled in a public or private institution.
