A Room With A View Restaurant – St. Thomas US Virgin Islands

Okay folks, we’ve told you like a thousand times that the St. Thomas Blog is open, honest and as transparent as they get. So here goes my first negative review of a St. Thomas restaurantA Room With A View

First let’s start with something positive…the view is spectacular! The drinks were great. Now for the not so good…

Last night we had dinner with a bunch of our friends (8 in all). So we were a pretty good size party. Two of our friends were 30 minutes late so we began without them. The waitress was nice but she was running around. It took her almost 15 minutes to greet us, get us menus and take our first drink order. In a fine dining restaurant this should happen much faster than that.

After she took our drink orders our late friends showed up. She took their drink orders and then removed all the menus from the table without taking our dinner order? I said “I think we’ll need those to order dinner”. She replied “You probably will remember what you want” and off she went. I guess so, since we were now coming up on 1 hour before our orders were even placed.

We ordered the crab cake appetizer and the “World Famous Garlic Bread”. The crab cakes came out like a fried potato. Like the McDonalds Hashbrown. It was not good, but what was worse was the “World Famous Garlic Bread”. The bread was so hard you literally couldn’t bite into it, then add that there was so much garlic that I still can’t get the taste out of my mouth this morning. Yuck!

I ordered the Lasagna and Nicci ordered the pasta with some type of creme sauce. There was a good size portion of the lasagna but the sauce was like it was straight out of a jar. I can doctor up a can of Prego much better than what I got for a $23.00 dollar piece of lasagna. Nicci said her food was okay.

There wasn’t a time in the evening that anyone of the 8 of us said “this food is great”. As a matter of fact no one even commented on the food.

Here’s where it goes horribly wrong. I ordered the Tiramisu for dessert. I LOVE Tiramisu and I know the good from the bad. A Room With A View should take this off their menu, it was that bad. It was so soaked with Kahlua that my eyes watered. I gave it to one of the other guys and he took one bite and put it down.

Now, Nicci and I have dined at almost all the St Thomas restaurants and we’re always very fair. Just read the blog and you’ll see. This was a bad day at A Room With a View for me. I’ve heard great things about them from many locals so I’m going to assume this was just a bad day. We’ll give them another try in a few months and see what happens.

    Alexis Said,

I used to work at that restaurant as a table busser and salad prep. The owner was such
an a** hole but he really made sure everything that went out of the kitchen was perfect. I guess he is slacking hard core!
So sad I love this place, I would recommend calling George (the owner) and telling him about your experience and I guarantee he will make sure it is taken care of trust me.

    Kansas Said,

I used to work at this restaurant. The owner is truly an a**hole, but only because he wants everything to be perfect. I’m really surprised you didn’t enjoy your dining experience. You must have gone on an off night.

    Tom Said,

Room With A View is probably the top restaurant on St. Thomas. Having been a resident for the past 30 years, I have seen many restaurants come and go…but Room With A View has stood the test of time and if anything gotten better. With Zagat and so many other food reviews, you look to food, service and ambiance. Room has it all. My personal favorites in the food department are the mussell appetizer, the lobster thermidor and the flan. The flan is to die for. When I die and go to heaven they will have Room With A View’s flan.

As to service, one reviewer had it right. George Hajimihalis, the proprietor is meticulous. He oversees every detail and personally makes sure that each diner is being satisfied to the fullest. Room With A View is not one of these absentee owner situations. George is there day in and day out overseeing the operation.

Another noteworthy item is the wine list. When the new restaurant facility was opened, George installed a state of the art wineroom for the most discriminating oenephile. Quite the wine list here.

And the ambiance…how can anyone pass up the white table treatment and the million dollar view. If you have a special event..there is the Crow’s Nest a restaurant within Room With A View with its own bar and even more view. I have used this several times for special events and at Christmas. Super spot!

All in all I think that Room With A View is the top restaurant and a great value for your dining dollar. I recommend it to one and all.

    BIG Kahuna Said,

Thanks Tom, that’s a wonderful review. When we go back I’ll follow up. Hopefully it was just a bad night.

    kazey Said,

Two things to do different next time: make sure ALL your party arrives on time; expect service to be slower and more laid back.

If the food is still bad, don’t go back. My top three in STT: Agave Terrace, Old Stone Farmhouse, Herve.

    Don Funuch Said,

George is the biggest A-hole that you ever want to meet. He doesn’t know anything about food. It is as bland as his personality. The only reason he has lasted this long is because of the huge portions which the local’s love. He also gets the majority of his business from the hospital workers who work late night and have no other choice. There are at least a dozen restaurants on the island that are better. Do yourself a favor. don’t waste your time or money on this loser

    Tara Said,

Room With A View is just that. It has a beautiful view, but everything else about it SUCKS. The main reason they are still in business, is because they are affiliated with Blue Beard’s Castle, and the locals love their late hours and large tasteless portions. George, the owner, is the biggest verbally abusive jerk I have ever met. As an example, he used to call Tom (from above who just happens to set up his website) “a big fat slow ass”. The food is definitely not anything to boost about.

    Brian Said,

Service on the whole island is slow and does’nt have the same standards as we do in the states. However the room with a view has wonderful food and great personality. Just returned from my honeymoon and I cant wait to go back and eat there again. Best dining we had all week!

    Vicki Chalmers Said,

Are we talking about the same restaurant? I was there a few weeks ago and fell in love with the place. My friend and I loved the food. We each had fish dishes that were out of this world. Salads were very good, bread so fresh, wine delish. No dessert. Owner came over. I thought he was a doll. Obviously I was there on a good night and I would go back again (if I ever get back to St. Thomas).

    Mary Whalen Said,

I think the review from 2008 should be taken off this site. We have stayed at the Castle and The Room with a View is just fantastic.

    BIG Kahuna Said,

Hi Mary, I’m glad you enjoyed yourself but reviews are honest and we never take them down. I think people are smart enough to see the year and know it was a while ago.

    Richard J. Kettyle Said,

    George,

This Ric & Margaret writing to you to ask you a question. Margaret has found out she has Celiac disease so she has to eat gluten free food. Do you serve any gluten free food at Room with a View? Please let me know. We hope so because we will sure miss your lasagna and other dishes. Thanx and see you in February.

    Anne Kovac Said,

I have been to Room with a View each year for the past three years and have loved it every time! Just last night for Valentine’s Day I took my elderly parents. The concierge at our hotel had messed up and reserved the wrong night, but Tammy and George were so gracious! They gave us a table on the window and risked angering a friend/client, just to make sure my parents had a great experience. The food was and has been great!

    Sonam Lalwani Said,

I was born and raised on St. Thomas. I am 18 years old now and have grown up having family dinners at Room With A View since I was a baby. I used to go to dinner there even when it was at its old location. I have never heard a bad review about that restaurant until I read your comment. I am not one to comment on these things but I just had to because Room With A View is an excellent restaurant. The food is absolutely delicious and the service is great. My family has known the owner, George for years as well and he is wonderful. I’ve been there on nights it is extremely busy and I have yet to say that their service or food wasn’t on point. It is an amazing restaurant and one of my favorites!! Sorry you didn’t enjoy it but maybe you should return and give it another chance because I’m sure you will change your mind!
